The Hafada piercing is said to have originated in Arab cultures as a rite of passage for boys giving visual evidence that they become a man and cannot go back to being a boy.
Traditionally the piercing is placed between the testicle and the base of the penis where it is believed it will prevent the testicle returning to the groin from where it descended in childhood. Depending on the wealth and position of a family, elaborate and costly jewellery would often decorate hafada piercings.
Members of the French Foreign Legion would often return from duty in North Africa wearing the Hafada.
Today piercings of the scrotum can be done anywhere and multiple piercings are not uncommon.
